Huskies Follow 95's to Weekend Sweep

In a great display of the development of the Huskies organization from top to bottom the EJHL Huskies completed a pair of double-header sweeps with the Dual State Select 95's over the weekend.

The 95's are led by former UMass-Lowell standout George Popp and play in the Mass. Select League- Tier I National bound. His young squad displayed excellent skill and game sense in earning two resounding victories over Valley Warriors and GBL Bruins. Danny Moynihan had the hot hand with four goals in the 6-2 win at the Valley Forum on Saturday.
On Sunday the 95's followed up with a 7-2 pasting of the GBL Bruins. Moynihan and Cam MacDonald netted two goals apiece in the win.

EJHL Huskies Head Coach Paul Jenkins was excited for the chance to play the double-headers. “It was a great display of the programs we offer. It was also great to see the friendships and excitement generated in the building as the players, coaches and parents interact. I have had so many of those boys [95's] in my skills programs and I know the parents so I was very excited to see them do well. George does a great job with the kids, but it did put pressure on us!”
Not to be outdone, the Juniors earned a 2-1 win at the Forum on the strength of a tenacious fore-check and standout goaltending by Bob Vorse. The Huskies made it tough on themselves when they failed finish on more of their grade 'A' scoring opportunities and held only a 1-0 lead at the first intermission. Matt Jacobs took a Mark Yates outlet high in the Huskies defensive zone and sped through the neutral zone with line-mates Zach Kozak and Matt Roberts in support. Jacobs darted down the right wing and zipped a snap-shot on Valley goaltender Jeff Rose at the right face-off dot. Kozak fought to the rebound and buried it for a 1-0 lead.

The second period started much like the first period with the Huskies carrying the majority of play. Unfortunately, the penalty bug struck mid-way through the period and handcuffed the Huskies. With the Huskies clinging to the 1-0 lead, they took a slew of penalties and lost momentum. The Huskies were in the midst of killing off four straight 5-on 3 disadvantages when Valley finally scored through a screen with: 07 seconds to go in the second period to tie the game at 1-1.

With the game tied, the action became a more even and up- and- down battle. Vorse made the save of the game with 17:11 on the clock when he stymied a short 2-on-0 break with a great left pad save. The Huskies later capitalized on the power-play when Bob Bryant camped himself at the top of the crease and beat Rose on a difficult tip. Manning the right point, Yates fed the puck to Phil Ginand in the right corner and Ginand curled out along the circle to the slot before ripping a slap-shot that Bryant redirected for the winner. The Huskies had to kill off a penalty to end the game and earn the 2-1 win. Vorse made 38 saves in the win.
